Liberia Costa Rica Airport
The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Aiport of Liberia, Costa Rica is offers excellent international connections to the US and Canada, as well as some Europe and South American countries. When last we checked, the departure tax was around $17 US.
New construction and expansion of the Daniel Oduber Quiros International airport mean increasing arrivals via Liberia year after year and put the city and airport on the map in a much bigger way. The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) is Liberia, Costa Rica's airport and gateway to some of the most spectacular and exclusive destinations in Costa Rica. Each year thousands of visitors use LIR Airport as the entry point to Costa Rica's northwest coast attractions and destinations. By the end of 2009 more that 500,000 visitors would have started their pleasure or business trip at LIR Airport.
Located minutes away from Costa Rica's most priviliged coast line LIR Airport offers and excellent alternative to the busy Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose.
Located in northern Costa Rica, the Liberia International Airport or the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport lies in Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste province. Set up mainly to cater to those tourists who wish to enjoy the wonderful weather and great beaches of the North Pacific Coast, the Liberia International Airport sits some 217 km northwest of the capital city San Jose. Fast becoming a major international airport exclusively for tourists who want to enjoy Costa Rica’s gorgeous Pacific coastline, arriving at the Liberia International Airport is the quickest way to reach places like Tamarindo, Playa Negra, Golfo de Papagayo, Playa Grande, Playa Flamingo, Playa Hermosa and the Marino Las Baulas National Park. Named in honor of the former president of Costa Rica, Daniel Oduber, whose idea it was to build an airport in the region and who was an avid supporter of expansion and development in Guanacaste, this international airport was opened in 1995, with its first commercial flight arriving here from Miami, Florida. Built on the Llano Grande plains, some 8 miles west of the city of Liberia, the Daniel Oduber International Airport is a full service airport with paramedical services, technical services, fueling services, a fire department and luggage handling services. Besides the usual airport facilities, there is a bank, restrooms, medical assistance and a snack bar on the airport premises as well. Currently undergoing renovations to accommodate more international arrival and departure flights, the airport has increased its aircraft ramp to hold 4 planes, as well as build 2 new buildings to house more passengers. By arriving at the Liberia International Airport, you can catch a short domestic flight to the airstrips of Samara, Tamarindo or Punta Islita, or you can visit the nearby national parks of Santa Rosa and Guanacaste. For those who are traveling on a budget there are many hotels in the neighboring area of the airport as well as along the highway that leads from Liberia to the coastal towns of Playa Panama, Playas del Coco, Papagayo Gulf and Nosara.

Daniel Oduber International Airport(LIR - Liberia international airport code) better known as Liberia Airport was inaugurated in 1995 and it is located approximately 8 kilometers from the city of Liberia ( 10 minutes driving distance) and is 220 Km (136 miles) northwest of the capital city of San José. If you are planning on driving from San Jose to the Liberia airport it may take almost four hours to get from one airport to the other it will depend on weather and traffic conditions. Below you will find a detailed route map made by a GPS system that will guide you when driving from one airport to the other.
This is a very important airport for Costa Rica and it features a great variety of services, such as: migration office, an emergency medical technicians department, refueling service, a fire brigade department, bank services, telephones, internet, sanitary facilities, restaurant and cafeteria. In addition to this, only a few minutes from the airport you will find hotels, car rental agencies, tour operators, taxi service, banks, restaurants, domestic and international flights services. The airport of Liberia is very small with only a couple of buildings as its terminal area so it´s very simple to get around.
Arriving to the Liberia International Airport is an excellent option if you wish to visit places like Tamarindo, Golfo de Papagayo, Flamingo, Playa Potrero, Playas del Coco, Playa Samara, Ocotal, Punta Islita, Santa Rosa National Park, La cruz, Arenal volcano, Palo Verde National Park, the Ostional Reserve, Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the Guanacaste National Park, Monteverde, Nicaragua, and many other places of interest that are either in Guanacaste Province or in the neighboring areas.
The airport of Liberia in Guanacaste is a very good option if you’re planning a trip to Nicaragua, since it is located only one hour and 30 minutes away from the border with this neighboring country. The area of the border is called Peñas Blancas and it is very interesting to do a short trip of a couple of nights to the beautiful Colonial city of Granada. The total expenses of crossing this border is less than nine American dollars per person and very few countries require a visa to entry Nicaragua.
Presently the Costa Rican government is planning to increase the area of the air terminal, which will give a better service to the high amount of tourists and locals, who day by day choose Guanacaste as one of the best destinations in Costa Rica.
Barra Honda National Park Caves hike
Hike in the Barra Honda National Park have main attraction is an intricately large system of limestone caverns which house a multitude of capricious forms and figures. Reef rocks constitute Barra Honda hill, of 300mts tall, which means, by old reefs that sink caused by an elevation provoked by tectonics faults 60 millions of years ago. You can enjoy of these caves and see the flora and fauna of this place, you can see coatis, agutis, anteaters and monkeys also point out species of tree and medical plants. This Hike takes around one hour approx and this hike is difficult, because depending on your physical fitness.
Combo Arenal Volcano (hike + hot springs)
The perfectly cone shaped volcano raises 4.899 feet above the sea level. It has been active since 1968, when it made its largest eruption. Its loud rumblings and frequent explosions of lava and ash during the day create a show that will stun you from miles away. On your way there, you will ride through the heavenly landscape of Lake Arenal, a man made lake that provides water for an hydroelectric plant and for irrigation in the low lands of Guanacaste province during the dry season. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a hiking tour at the surroundings of the volcano, in an overview area called El Silencio. After that, you will experience the mineral hot springs. After nightfall, the glow of flowing lava can be seen from several points in the area (if it´s not cloudy). During the tour it is possible to spot toucans, guans, oropendolas, monkeys and coatis.
Corobici River floating tour
Corobici River is perfect if you have been dreaming about the joys of white water rafting. The waters are not rough, but you have to work out to manage them. (The river is class I – II). The tour is two hours of rubber boat trip down the river which is bordered by tropical dry forest, where you will see trees like Ceiba, Mahogany and Guanacaste. You may see are exotic birds, Jesus Christ lizards and monkeys. Before you board the rubber raft, a certified guide will instruct you on safety procedures. *Minimum age: 6 years old
Monteverde Cloud Forest & treetop walkways
Monteverde is one of the destinations in Costa Rica you have to visit. Our tour includes the Treetop Walkways, Butterfly Gardens, Insect and Reptile Exhibitions at Selvatura Park. Come and learn about the natural history of this wildlife sanctuary, about its mammals, birds and plants.
Palo Verde National Park (Tempisque River)
Palo Verde is one of the most important and interesting National Parks of Costa Rica. It has 12 different habitats within the park including mangroves, swamps, swamps forests, saltwater and freshwater lagoons and marshes. Enjoy a two hour-boat ride on the Tempisque River watching the fabulous array of wild birds and a myriad of creatures such as howler and white-faced monkeys, green iguanas and coatis, anteaters and crocodiles.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park
This National Park was created to protect the biodiversity around Rincon de la Vieja Volcano area. It extends over 14083 hectares of semi-deciduous forest and very moist forest and includes a barren rocky terrain at altitudes that range from 1950 feet to 5748 feet above the sea level on the Caribbean and Pacific sides of the Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range. Fumaroles, hot mud pools and the eerie steam holes of Las Pailas create an amazing landscape. The hiking tour takes about two hours. During this hiking you will get to see the secondary Waterfall, which is about 195 feet high and is located on a rocky terrain devastated by the volcanic eruptions. The tour not only provides the opportunity to appreciate Rincon de la Vieja´s geothermal wonders, it also allows a close view of an ancient forest hundreds of years old. Huge trees protect spider monkeys, leaf-cutter ants, toucans and all kind of great and small creatures. * The park is closed on Mondays ** Minimum age: 6 years old
Tenorio River rafting tour class III-IV
